Ubuntu “Configuration grub-pc” – Selecting Options

grub-pc package selection

Clarity TLDR: Use [tab] to switch between options, use [spacebar] to select.

How do you select options in the Configuration grub-pc menu on Ubuntu/Debian? It sounds like a weird question, but I was trying to install some software (Leantime open source project manager) when I was met with a warning that the drive my grub partition was on had either been removed or the unique identifier changed.

I followed the instructions, which were to either run “sudo apt install –fix-broken” or “sudo dpkg –configure -a” but each time I was met with a dialog allowing me to select a drive to install the grub package, or to just iunstall it on all drives.

However, I was unable to select any options in the grub-pc configuration menu. I could cycle through them with arrows or tabs but when pressing [Enter] I was told that none had been selected and tthe world would therefore end (or something). Nothing I did would seem to select an option.

I ended up finding out that on some Ubuntu versions, pressing ‘up’ and ‘down’ arrows allows you to move through the options but pressing [space] actually makes the selection by appending an ‘*’ to an option on a list.
